Jesus taught that Christians can do seemingly impossible things, and one of those things is to forgive people who quite obviously don't deserve to be forgiven. If someone wrongs you, Jesus says, and then says that he is sorry, you should forgive him--even if this happens seven times in the same day! I used to wonder a little just what he had in mind with this, but experience has taught me just this past year or so. I was just so furious with someone that no matter how much I told myself that I needed to forgive and move on, I just could not stop being angry. I told myself that there was fault on both sides, and that I might have misunderstood, and all those things that you tell yourself when you are trying to see things from the other point of view, but that just didn't work. Then I felt guilty for being angry. There was nothing that I could do except ask for forgiveness myself, and ask for understanding. I could not make myself trust and forgive someone who I knew was not trustworthy! Then it gradually began to dawn on me that it was not the offender that I should trust at all, but God. Because all things--even terrible things--can be used by God for his purpose, and can then work for good, I don't have to be defensive. I don't have to justify the behavior of others, and I don't have to judge their behavior either. I didn't have to keep trying to forgive. I simply had to trust God, and let him use the situation as he willed. In that context, the things that had made me angry started to seem unimportant, after all. If you have a little faith in God, Jesus said, you can do the impossible--you can make mulberry trees fly to the ocean, you can forgive.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. John 14:1 NIV If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back
to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him." And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who
love him, who have been called according to his purpose. ![]() |
